Elevate Your Craft, Enhance Client Experience, and Increase Sales
Let’s talk about a topic that separates the amateurs from the professionals—culling your images.
We’ve all been there—drowning in hundreds of images after a session, feeling the temptation to deliver them all “just in case.” At first glance, it seems generous, but here’s the reality: more choices don’t lead to happier clients. They lead to overwhelm, indecision, and diluted impact.
What if refining your culling process could elevate the client experience, deepen emotional connections, and even boost your sales? That’s the power of a curated, intentional image selection.
Why Culling Your Images is Non-Negotiable
1. Reduces Client Overwhelm
Your clients aren’t photographers. They don’t see subtle variations in expression or composition the way you do.
Handing over 200+ images forces them into the exhausting process of sifting through too many choices. Instead of delight, they experience decision fatigue.
A refined selection allows them to focus on the moments that truly matter.
2. Enhances the Client Experience
When clients receive only the best, they trust your expertise. You’re not just delivering photos—you’re delivering an effortlessly luxurious experience. Instead of leaving them to decipher what’s best, you guide them to a polished, emotionally compelling collection.
3. Increases Emotional Connection
A tight selection ensures every image carries weight. Instead of remembering the stress of choosing, clients are left with an album of unforgettable moments or wall art that transports them back in time every time they see it. Their emotional connection to the session strengthens, making your work even more invaluable.
4. Drives Sales & Perceived Value
Curation enhances value. When clients see fewer images, each one feels more significant. They buy confidently—whether it’s prints, albums, or wall art—because they’re choosing from an expertly crafted collection.
My Journey to Aggressive Culling
Early in my career, I equated more options with more value. I delivered dozens of similar shots, believing it gave my clients flexibility—while also relying on online galleries for delivery (a conversation for another day if you're looking to elevate your sales process).
But during my in-person reveal sessions, I noticed something: my clients weren’t elated; they were overwhelmed. Too many choices made decision-making difficult, and instead of excitement, I saw uncertainty.
The turning point came when I decided to cull aggressively for a high school senior session. Instead of presenting 200+ images, I delivered 80 of the most powerful.
The result? My clients fell in love with over half of the photos.
Which meant they couldn't walk away from the in-person sales session with just 5 or 10 images and instead opted for a keepsake album, a metal print (or two), a desk print collection, and at minimum six sets of wallet photos.
In 2018, this was a $2,000 sale.
This shift didn’t just improve my client experience—it transformed my business.
How to Cull Like a Pro
1. Set Clear Criteria
Define what makes an image worthy of delivering:
Technical Excellence: Sharp focus, proper exposure, and flawless composition.
Emotional Impact: Does it evoke a feeling?
Storytelling: Does it add to the narrative of the session?
2. Detach Emotionally
As photographers, we get attached to moments for personal reasons. But your client doesn’t see the session the way you do.
Let go of shots that don’t serve the story.
3. Limit Your Selection
Deliver an intentional number of images based on the session type:
Portrait Sessions: 80-100 images (depending on outfit changes, locations, props, etc.)
Weddings: Aim for 100 images per major event (ceremony, reception, etc.) or hour of coverage.
4. Edit Before Culling
A quick round of basic edits—exposure, color correction—helps you better evaluate each image’s potential.
5. Use Culling Tools
Speed up the process with software like Photo Mechanic, Lightroom, or AI-assisted culling programs.
Efficiency is key.
6. Take Breaks (Or Outsource!)
Culling fatigue is real. Stepping away and returning with fresh eyes helps ensure you’re making objective decisions. Or outsource culling to someone who understands the art of curation.
Hi, shameless plug—when I cull for my clients, I approach it with a storytelling and final print perspective, ensuring we create a compelling collection without overwhelming the client.
Why Clients Appreciate Culling
1. Less Stress, More Enjoyment
Instead of sorting through an overwhelming number of photos, clients can focus on falling in love with a perfectly curated selection.
2. Trust in Your Expertise
A refined collection reassures clients that you’ve already done the work for them, leaving only the best of the best.
3. Increased Satisfaction & Sales
When every image is a “wow” moment, clients feel more confident investing in high-end products.
